WriteLog and Windows 2000/ Windows XP

If you are considering an upgrade to Windows 2000 or XP, there a couple of things you need to know:

WriteLog does not support devices connected to LPT ports (except for printing) and does not support the plug-in HAL boards (P-38, PCI-3000, etc.) on Windows 2000/XP. And there are currently no plans for writing the drivers that would be necessary to change these restrictions. If this list of restrictions sounds familiar, its because its the same list as for Windows NT. To repeat: if you are using an LPT port for CW, for a W5XD keyer, or for an antenna relay, then those functions will be broken if you upgrade to Windows 2000/XP. The multi-function keyer will work on Windows 2000/XP and does provide the functions that WriteLog cannot provide on an LPT port on that operating system.

WriteLog's networking prior to version 10.13 does not function properly on Windows 2000/XP. (Microsoft changed the rules for network share names.) Version 10.13 does network on Windows 2000, but will not network with older versions on the same network. (It has always been advisable to network only identical versions of WriteLog). WriteLog continues to support mixed operating systems on the network: any combination of machines Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 and Windows XP can be networked as long as the same version of WriteLog is installed on all of them.

The latest WriteLog installer (versions 10.13 and higher) automatically detects the difference between Windows 95/98 and Windows NT/2000/XP and does the proper network setup at install time. If you have done WriteLog networking on Windows NT you are aware that it was a bear. Now the installer sets everything up properly. However, if you upgrade Windows 98 to Windows 2000/XP, then this little bit of WriteLog magic won't happen (because the WriteLog installer ran under Windows 98). You can re-run the WriteLog 10.13 installer after the upgrade. Or, you can do these commands (after the Windows 2000 upgrade)

Commands to convert WriteLog networking from Windows 95/98 to Windows 2000/XP:

c:\ham\programs> netset95 /remove
c:\ham\programs> netsetupnt

(these commands only work in WriteLog 10.13 and higher)
